Do players have contact with the company sponsors and the community? Are their relationships outside of the black and white of the contracts?

Most of the time agents contact viable sponsors that would interest both the player and their organizations. Yes there are plenty of relationships outside of the contracts, however most are in a formal verbal agreement. Most times players and their representation select the written contract.

How much do it cost to have an agent?

A basketball agent is hired by yourself and you don’t have to pay any agent to represent you. You are essentially the employer to him/her and each team will pay him his cut after you are signed and is written in contract. Be careful with anyone asking you to pay them, it is a scam

How do you get paid.. every month week how does work….?

Most pro basketball contracts abroad, salaries are paid monthly. In some slight cases and in the past, some players could/would receive some types of bonuses after each game. But it depends on the contract. Nowadays, all contracts are written for the months that you play (6-8 months) and you’re paid every month. During the first or final, it depends on what is stated in your contract.

Ok i am a senior in high school and I am interested in playing overseas basketball in japan. Do I need some college to play and if so how much do I need?

If you’re senior in high school, you have to be extremely good like the cases of Brandon Jennings or really tall. Most teams and scouts in Japan look for tall centers and players that have college or professional experience.

Is it true that in professional basketball overseas you get paid based on your performance?? So if you don’t perform very well, then you don’t get paid?

You get contracts based on your previous performance and experience with previous teams, yes. However, if you don’t perform well and have a contract you will get paid. Depending on each contract, you can also be fired and your contract terminate, hence you will not get paid. But most contract garauntee that you get paid even if your performance is not up to par, but you might have greater chances of being fired.

Hi Sylita my first question is their an age limit in order to play overseas and if so what might that age be.

In Europe and Overseas the leagues are different and honestly depending on the level there isn’t much restriction on age. Basketball clubs in Europe are very different from the structure in the USA. They have leagues based on age, similar to AAU basketball and if you’re a good player no matter the age limit pretty much you can play in a top level team. Ricky Rubio of Spain played in the ACB Spain which is equivalent to the NBA in the USA (for Spain) and he started when he was 16. Now this year he’ll be drafted pretty sure in the first round.

Why is it so difficult to get responses from agents and/or coaches for try-outs?

Well I think its common, for agents many are picky and are looking for players who have a “name” or those who have proven themselves as a professional player already. Now with so many players it can be difficult but not impossible. But in the Spring and Summer agents and clubs are busy building on the new season and new teams aren’t finalized, budgets etc. Best time to contact agents honestly is during the winter season and right before Spring!

i am M.A I in exercise physiology and nutrition . i want to study and work about basketball nutrition and physiology , please show me how can i start and be success.tnx

Please visit After Basketball where the website explains how to start your own business has a basketball nutritionist or trainer.

I am 5’8″ 2-3 guard currently playing Division 2 basketball. When I graduate, I want to play overseas basketball, is it going to be harder for me since I am shorter and more of a shooting guard then point guard?

It will be harder mostly because a lot European teams are looking for big power forwards and centers. If you’re a shorter guard, you have to really stand out and be exceptional. Or start in a lower level league and work your way up! But it’s not impossible

How do i get in touch with a agent?

I honestly think the best approach is by telephone. The internet is great to find Basketball Agents and agencies but to get a real clear response, calling is favorable and being prepared and organized of course. Have your profile ready to be sent by any means possible: Email, fax or regular snail mail.

I really want to play overseas, but I don’t know where to start? Is it a good idea to contact people on the internet?

You can start by contacting players who have played overseas and use their contacts to find agents and teams. Close recommendations are always 99% safer than with people from the internet. I’ve seen many basketball scams to rise the past couple of years. Some players have lost money by sending to scam artist who promise a basketball dream. Remember never pay for an agent. With most contracts the team pays the agent if they are legit.

well if i had an agent i would like to know if he or she can get me a scholarship and well i want a agent that can help me really

A agent can help you get overseas. I’m not sure of the NCAA rules if agents can help you get a scholarship. I recommend you reading or getting free reports of the Recruit Me website

What is the best way for me to get into playing overseas if I didn’t play basketball in high school or college, but have the skill and knowledge for the game?

The best way is to participate if you could in combines because with demonstration of your game you’re nobody. You have to travel and play in leagues so teams and agents can see you.

Does China allow americans to play for their team? if so, how do i make contact? i am moving to china from the united states, and i just graduated from fresno state, where i played division one basketball. Thanks!

Yes, China does allow American players. There are specific agents who work with top basketball players who want to play in China. Most teams in China are looking for names and big players so its not an easy task!

Hi, I want to know about local tryouts in Texas for either professional teams or semi-professional teams. I have college experience, but due to injuries never completed my basketball career. I am healthy and working out to get back in shape. Please let me know. Thanks, Art

Yes, this is a team the Dallas Diesel which has helped many players get overseas with their contacts and leagues. They are serious in helping players and get your name out there. I can’t say enough more good things about them!

English, Scotish, Irish basketball league and Slovenian one. Can u compare them??

The English, Scotish and Irish basketball leagues are considerably the same and because the countries are mainly focused on European Football (Soccer) you can see it in the quality of basketball leagues. They aren’t the best leagues in Europe. In Slovenia, the league is well known in Europe and have 4 different divisions, which says a lot about the quality.

i’m still playing college basketball and i wanted to knew if it’s aginst ncaa rules to go to a an overseas basketball clinic

I don’t have a 100% answer but if you are working out its like any camp/clinic to improve your skills, I guess its ok. However, if teams and agents approach you to play in the league that would go against NCAA rules.

Next Q & A for basketball players!

I have no college playing experience but am a good player. Are there any avenues i can take to get a tryout. Even at the lowest levels?

Everything is possible, but contacting a good basketball agent would be your best bet to market your skills and getting a video of you playing in some type of good competition and organized ball.

How long does it usually take for a coach or agent to get back with you as a client, or player.

Well normally if a coach or agent is interested they would contact you back pretty fast. In most cases, coaches and teams get requests from many players daily. So, I can imagine they would look up your name online to see if you’ve played in college and find stats to see if you’re worth contacting. It is a business and its easier to market players who have experience and proof of game.

I am a player looking for where to start playing my pro career anywhere arounnd the world and i have a vidoe incase you a interested in it my question is how should i start playing pro basketball below is my video for you.

To answer your question, from your video and information that I see, you’re doing exactly right. You are exposing yourself online with video and stats from your career. Now like most players unless they sign multiple year contracts, is wait for an opportunity to arise and decide upon it.

Were do you find agents best? Do you go online or is there like offices were u can go like travel agents?

If you know of a player who plays overseas and they have an agent, you should ask them. Perhaps their agent can work with you. Mostly, word of mouth and experience from other players is a great way to find a good agent. Also, top websites such as Basketball Connect and Basketball Agencies Directory is a source where you can find agencies as well. Once you find an agency you like, try asking for a players information to find out more about the agency.

How can i start my process into going overseas to play basketball when i come out of high school?

I can say its relatively hard because you only have references of playing against youger and smaller players. Unlike as a professional who have most likely played in college and play up against top players who have the same skills. I recommend finding an agency who has experience with marketing high school players.

Well thats it for the first round of Basketball Overseas Q & A for players. Please post questions or comments for the next round at:

I’ve been getting several good emails questioning basketball overseas. So that everyone benefits I’ll be answering all questions unless they don’t overlap. Here is Round 1 of Basketball Overseas Q & A for AGENTS.

How does the player represenative gets his money? Is there ever an instance when agents do not get paid!

In all cases in the FIBA rules regarding player, team and agent, the Agency gets paid by the team/club directly. Never does the player pay you nor should you request money from the player.

I am a new agent and find myself dealing with a lot of players wanting to go overseas, I don’t really know what are good teams and how to get my guys exposure? Do i send tapes and when I look up teams on the internet they are all in other languges? Please help me out with this….

As an agent one of the first and most important things you must do is make good contacts. Contacting and partnering with other agents in other countries who know the system, know the teams and the language. Once you find a reliable partner you will send him/her your top players and they will find teams after which you both split the commission from the player’s contract.

What are the steps to becoming an agent for overseas….I have a player that has been invited to play ball in Turkey, Istanbul Besiktas…is t here an agent requirement with this league and if so what is the process.

As I said above it is better to have a contact in Turkey so if a problem arises you’ll understand the system and law if need be. Jurisdiction in other countries are different and if you’re not a citizen you’re not able to fight any battle without a proper contact.
