For coaches in the USA who aspire to coach basketball in Europe it is always best to either have great references from coaches in Europe, a terrific agent or certification of the European game. Which in many cases can be a lot different than in the States. Accreditation from Universities who offer the program such as: University Of Worcester that offer a program for individuals who look to increase their basketball knowledge and all facets of the game.

Requirements

Applicants should have a good first degree in a coaching related degree. Students/Applicants who hold a lower coaching-related degree classification, or a non-coaching related degree will be considered on a case by case basis and may be required to submit a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate coaching experience.

A critical understanding of the game and coaching process is a basic requirement of admission. Candidates with an acceptable academic background and/or extensive experience in the game of basketball may apply for Accreditation of prior learning (APL) and experience (APEL). It is advisable for candidates to discuss this with the Course Leader initially.

Upcoming Schedule

July-August 2011: Annual Basketball Conference/Clinic in Kaunas. Students will be required to attend for the three days prior to the conference for an Induction into the MSc programme and to remain for a further three days post conference for the taught element of the modules covered: Research Methods, European Basketball Coaching Concepts and European Basketball Coaching Pedagogy.

January 2012: University of Worcester visit: Students will visit the University of Worcester for one week to study taught elements of European Basketball Coaching Pedagogy, Scientific Concepts of Basketball Coaching modules. They will also submit the assessment for the European Basketball Coaching Concepts module.

July-August 2012: Annual Basketball Conference, Kaunas: Students will attend the three days prior to the conference. Modules covered: Current Issues in Basketball Research, Applied Professional Placement. Assessment submission for the European Basketball Coaching Pedagogy and Scientific Concepts of Basketball Coaching modules.

January 2013: University of Worcester visit: Students will visit the University of Worcester for one week. Modules: Research Methods presentation, Advanced Independent Study Conference.

July-August 2013: Conference invitations: Invitation for students to present their Advanced Independent Study research (Dissertation) at the Annual Basketball Conference, Kaunas, or at the 10th World Congress of Performance Analysis in Sport taking place at the University of Worcester.

November 2013: Graduation ceremony at Worcester Cathedral. *A range of accommodation is available at competitive prices for visits to the
University of Worcester and the Lithuanian Academy of Physical Education.

I’ve added a new website to the Basketball Overseas network!! Since 2005 Basketball Connect.com has served as social networking for players, agents, teams and coaches. We have grown tremendously throughout the past 6 years, however to make it easy for new users who are looking for mostly information, I have created a separate channel to share other topics and questions within Pro Basketball Forum. I have taken the old forum from Basketball Connect and have redirected it’s own domain and space. The great feature of this app as well are the charts that are produced and that can be filtered.

Overall the app is pretty good. I love the option in version 2.05, that you can print the basketball stats reports via an Airprint compatible printer!

How do you measure your success off and on the court? Well, it can be measured in many ways. Those of you who’ve made it overseas, AWESOME, those who haven’t, don’t be bummed about it. The lifetime of a basketball player varies a lot and no one should ever get down if they have never “made it”. There are so many equations that go into the possibility of being a professional basketball player or coach. First, how hard have you actually worked on reaching your goal?

Do you wake up and think about improving everyday? Have you reached out and make connections with all of your contacts and your contacts friends? Your future depends on you. If you have done all that you can to be successful, you will reach your goals. However, it does take a reasonable amount of patience.

I’m one, am a very impatient person at times. However, over the years I know when to be patient and do everything that I have to reach my goals. Slowly but surely, things start happening and at times too fast!!

So, measuring your success should be focused on what you’ve done and that means 100% towards your goal. Once you’ve done that and keep at it, you’ll see results! Don’t give up, at any stage of your process to play professional basketball overseas or in your country. If you don’t make it, re-evaluate and make changes to your process and you’ll see how other things could develop!

In the past before excepting basketball jobs overseas I would try my best to make contact of former players from the team that is interested in me. Why? Every contract on surface sounds nice and dandy but sometimes their could be issues with the club or timing of payments. Depending on my circumstances it is always wise to do a fair amount of research of any team or club who has offered you a contract. When I came out of school there was no Facebook, only email and honestly not EVERYONE had an email account.

So, contacting people by phone was the only way to find out the scoop. However, now players have it A LOT easier. With social website gatherings such as Facebook, Myspace and Linkedin. You can honestly make your life so much easier and avoid losing time and patience by signing with a team that could give you headaches later.

How does it work? Easy!

First imagine this .. If I received an offer to play in Europe for FC Barcelona first I would head to their website. Look at the roster for the current season and a season once before. Search for players from your country, in my case I would search for an American player then copy their name in a text editor. Do that for any player that you can communicate with in your language.

Next, I would start with Facebook because you can confirm visually the player. If you search a player in Google.com and most likely they will be listed by Eurobasket.com, which gives “free” the players image. However, the complete profile at Eurobasket.com is a paid subscription. But starting that route is best.

Next, go ahead and fire up your Facebook account and do a search. Note, many top/famous players may not be listed. Some leagues forbid players from adding their personal accounts for security reasons and privacy obviously. Some players may even go by different names. But don’t worry not all leagues or players are restricted. Do a search for the name and confirm the picture or similarities of which you did in your Google Search.

Now, for the final step I wouldn’t recommend adding the person as a friend on Facebook.com. For respect in general I would simply write a private message stating who you are, why you are contacting and if they have time to help answer your questions. In the first message I would not write anything long but simply if they have time to answer a few questions about their former club.

If they respond great, if not – move onto the next and repeat. Don’t expect an answer from everyone. Social networks such as these many people don’t have time to answer and write back. Especially when it comes to strangers. However, they are some players that would be happy to help.

I’m sure you that you have lots of basketball highlight videos on your hard drive or maybe on DVD. I know recently after purchasing my Macbook pro I decided to make use of cloud services such as Dropbox.com to upload and back up my media files. I don’t serve any important documents on cloud websites but video and images for sure. Even though most computers come with sufficient amounts of hard drive space, but overtime it gets clogged..

I suggested to my family the same. I use Dropbox specifically because with their service you get 2GB free and it can be syncronized with my computer and iPhone. For me on the go its great so I recommend that you guys check out Dropbox!

When it comes to pursuing a remarkable coaching career there are many things that can be helpful in a coaching career.  Many coaches have participated in many activities in communities around the country and have gained exposure for the community service they provided.  Not only can potential professional basketball coaches participate in community service activities such as blood drives but many offer one day coaching clinics for underprivileged youth that are interested in sports and sponsoring camps across the country.

By participating in these activities and volunteering in communities it gains exposure for those interested in pursuing a coaching career.  By gaining exposure a coach can land his dream job that he/she enjoys.  There have been many success stories in the past on coaches that were active in communities across the nation and are among the top basketball coaches in sports history.  When a coach has his/her community involved they are not only helping the community but, also their career.  Also when participating in community activities coaches have the opportunity to network with other coaches that may be involved with a similar community service activity.  By building a network with other coaches or individuals that are in the sports field, this gives a coach the chance to exchange contact information and can be the beginning of a healthy relationship.  Many coaches have landed key jobs by building a network with individuals involved in the sports world.  The same thing applies to coaches participating at local camps.  At camps there are many coaches that are also participating and athletes from around the world that may be a recruit for you in the future.  Although majority of the coaches that volunteer for these camps and community service activities aren’t getting paid they get privilege of helping a community and building a network that can help in the future.
